Mackinac County (83D)

Excellent airport with a well-equipped FBO and an attendant there full-time. Fuel was priced very reasonably, and using the self-serve system was simple. The tie-down space is roomy and free, which is always a nice bonus. My only complaint was that the PAPI was out of service during my visit, though that seems to happen fairly often at airports around the U.P. Overall, it is a great GA stop with welcoming service and solid facilities.

Great airport! We came through for fuel on the way to Mackinac Island. The attendant was really friendly and helpful, staying hands-on to speed up fueling, keep the line flowing, and cut down pump waits. Terminal building is nice too. On good summer days, stay sharp since helicopter tours operate out of 83D. They communicate well and keep a good lookout, but it can be busy airspace.

What a wonderful airport terminal. Paul the Airport Manager is SO FINE! Call ahead and ask for the Crew Car. Go into town (less than 5mins away) and get pasties at Lehto's Pasties! (See my post on Michigan Pilots Facebook page) Be mindful of geese poop on the runway which can be mistaken for large debris and can throw off your sight picture when landing. The signal with Minneapolis Center is sketchy below about 2500-3000' so don't be surprised if you can't get flight following until higher up.
