With its unrivaled closeness to Lake Okoboji, Spirit Lake Municipal is a good choice for GA planes to "drop in" for a few hours, or a few days with tie-down parking offered. Be mindful during night arrivals; low intensity runway lighting & runway 16 has REIL while 34 does not (16 REIL, LIRL activation on CTAF 122.7) If practicable, I prefer arriving 16 and departing 34. Be cautious on high density altitude days here if you’re in a laminar wing plane (like a Mooney) but certainly land here instead of the 2,000 ft at the other close airport….also watch out for wind shear on departure and approach because of the tall trees. As soon as you clear those on climb out the wind will strike you, suggest not being at Vx when that occurs at 100 ft or be prepared to lower the nose fast!
