Penns Cave (N74)

Arrived June 6 and was a little startled to find that flying the normal left-hand pattern at the proper altitude left me just a few hundred feet over the terrain. I'll use a straight-in next time. The park is an easy short walk, but it's no big deal unless, like my wife and me, you're in your 70s. There are no tie-downs, so bring your own if the wx is iffy. Trevor E.

Flew into N74 today. The grass was nicely maintained. But watch the weather for a few days before heading in if you're on small tires. Even a little rain and my plane would probably sink in and get stuck. Weather overall matters here since the field sits in a valley, with high mountains off the downwind. Runway 25 seems to be the main runway, with enough room to turn around and get lined up for departure. There was some FOD in the first 500 feet. The last 500 feet or so drops off pretty noticeably. Nice field!

During my visit to Penns Cave it appears that somebody took the avgas from my right tank, leaving it empty. Twelve gallons of fuel do not simply drain out in three hours without a trace of blue dye.
