Pros: bathroom with soap, plus the gas was cheap Cons: no toilet paper, and the bathroom had a ton of spiders (definitely not for the faint of heart). The 100LL hose reel was the hardest one I’ve ever had to use. It wouldn’t lock in place, so I had to fuel one side of my plane, taxi around, and then fuel the other side. The reel mechanism could really use an update. Still, this is pretty much what you’d expect from an airfield in the middle of nowhere. I’m not upset at all, but figured this might be useful for someone else.

I cannot say enough about the good experience I had landing at M24. All except the surprise of a flat nose tire on my Bonanza that was discovered on rollout. Preston grabbed his tug and got off the turnoff and to a tie down and proceeded to call around to find an A&P that could get me going with a new tire. Ed Cartier from Cartier Aviation (757-348-8115) made the 1.5 hour drive with a tire and a tube and got me going in no time, all for a very fair price. I save the best for last and that’s the volunteer airport manager, Duron Hatten. Duron took superb care of me, offering food, connecting me with people that could help and driving me to a hotel and picking me up the next day. I’ve landed at hundreds of airports over the last 40 years, but my time at Dean Griffin is right at the top of fine experiences, reminding me what’s best about people and aviation. Don’t shy away from airports like this. Good people and good fuel prices!
